EL PASO, TEXAS — The United States Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a Trump executive order on birthright citizenship violates the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, invalidating the order nationwide.

While Executive Order 14160 threatens citizenship status in the abstract, the policy also has practical consequences for the health and economic stability of millions of children and their families. In anticipation of winning their case, the administration had laid the groundwork to restrict access to health care and anti-hunger programs based on the executive order.

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, the Protecting Immigrant Families Coalition issued the following statement by its executive director, Adriana Cadena.

“We applaud the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. Barbara upholding the Fourteenth Amendment. Birthright citizenship is enshrined in the United States Constitution for a reason – it’s a promise that every child born on this soil has an equal chance at success in this country. Importantly, this order protects children’s access to the health care, food, and other basics every child needs to thrive. PIF celebrates this win for the precedent it affirms and the relief it gives families nationwide.”
