HUD Mixed-Status Rule Toolkit

Updated February 25, 2026

Context

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has released a proposed change to federal regulations, denying federally subsidized housing to entire families that include a person who is undocumented. The proposed rule denies housing assistance to eligible individuals – including U.S. citizens and lawfully present immigrants – if someone else in their family does not have an eligible immigration status. It also requires eligibility verification for all individuals based on a flawed system. Use the resources below to learn more about the proposal and take action.
