Our Goal

On February 19, 2026, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that would, if finalized, deny federally subsidized housing to tens of thousands of families that include a person who is undocumented. Our goal is to help you stay informed and take action to oppose this rule change.

Take Action

Why It Matters

  • This proposal will separate families or force them into homelessness.

1 in 4 U.S. citizen children has at least one immigrant parent. Families will be forced to choose between staying together and eviction.

  • It’s a distraction from the administration’s failure to address the housing affordability crisis.

Housing costs remain a real burden for millions of hard-working families. Immigrant families are not responsible for high costs of housing, but this proposal places the blame on them without addressing the true causes of unaffordable housing.

  • It is an abuse of power that threatens families and communities all over the country.

HUD talks about the proposal as excluding people who are undocumented, but that’s not true – undocumented people are already denied housing subsidies under current policy. Instead, the proposal would evict people who qualify for housing subsidies – lawfully present immigrants and U.S. citizens in immigrant families.

Key Takeaways

  • Nothing has changed at this moment. We are taking action now to oppose the rule being implemented.
  • If you never shared your immigration status with your HUD housing provider before, you should not give this information without consulting an attorney.
  • The proposal is part of the broader assault on lawfully present immigrants, US citizens in immigrant families, and the communities that welcome them.
