EL PASO, TEXAS — The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York issued an order Friday, blocking a Trump administration effort to withhold federal child care funding to states led by Democratic governors. The “temporary restraining order” issued by Hon. Vernon Broderick remains in effect as litigation continues, ensuring that child care funding appropriated by Congress will remain available to New York, California, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota.

Those states are home to 4.4 million children under 5 – about ¼ of the country’s total preschool-aged population. And they are home to about 5.9 million adults with children under 5, again about ¼ of the national population of adults with young children.

Responding to the order, the Protecting Immigrant Families Coalition issued the following statement from its executive director, Adriana Cadena.

“We applaud Judge Broderick’s order as an important victory for the rule of law. The Trump administration’s effort to hold millions of families, employers, and the economy hostage to advance its racist agenda isn’t just abhorrent, it’s illegal.”
